Jesus I am declarations – before Abraham was – Introduction

iambeforeabraham1

Today, it was an introduction to the series: Below are the notes from the slides for the lesson.

We considered Jesus and what he is doing today, what he has done in the past of human history, and what will happen when he comes back on his second coming.

On this introduction lesson we looked in different places where a name for God is in Scripture:

We read Exodus 3 where God gives his name to Moses. YHWH. This name in English is translated to LORD (all capital letters) and I AM, I AM WHO I AM in our Bibles. This name is used in the Bible’s Old Testament Hebrew 6,828 times. YHWH in English is pronounced Yahweh and written in the Bible in capitals as LORD.

[13] Then Moses said to God, “If I come to the people of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ what shall I say to them?” [14] God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’”  [15] God also said to Moses, “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘The LORD, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.’ This is my name forever, and thus I am to be remembered throughout all generations. (Exodus 3:13-15)

We also read John 8, where Jesus says “Before Abraham was, I am.” Vs. 58

We also spend time reading Revelation 19 speaking of Jesus coming to judge and to bring the end of the first earth and the first heaven, and on Revelation 21 making a new earth and a new heaven. One observation from the study time, is how Jesus comes on his second coming, full of power and might, the way the Jews anticipated the Messiah for an earthly human rule, but this coming, his second, he comes  in judgment to make all things new and set all things right in such an overwhelming way that is completely new.

[12] His eyes are like a flame of fire, and on his head are many diadems, and he has a name written that no one knows but himself. [13] He is clothed in a robe dipped in blood, and the name by which he is called is The Word of God. (Revelation 19:12–13)

[16] On his robe and on his thigh he has a name written, King of kings and Lord of lords. (Revelation 19:16)

and on Revelation 21

[1] Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. [2] And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. [3] And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. [4] He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”

[5] And he who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” Also he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.” [6] And he said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give from the spring of the water of life without payment. [7] The one who conquers will have this heritage, and I will be his God and he will be my son. (Revelation 21:1–7)

On the following slide, we considered how Jesus is YES and satisfaction to all of our needs. A commentary to 2 Cor 1:20

“For all the promises of God find their Yes in him. That is why we utter the Amen through him, to the glory of God.” 2 Cor 1:20
