Two Judgements

Notes on the two judgments

  1. The Great White Throne Judgement
  2. Judgment Seat of Christ

The first one is for unbelievers

“And John goes on, you remember, as he brings us to the consummation of this great vision, to speak about the judgment of the great white throne and the opening of the books. And if anyone’s name was not found written in the Book of Life, he was thrown into the lake of fire. The cowardly, he says, in 21:8, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters, and all liars; their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur, which is the second death. It is the place, as he said in 20:10, where the devil who deceived them was thrown, and where the beast and the false prophet were thrown. It is, he says, a place of torment day and night forever. And in that place, he finally concludes, there is an outside where are the dogs and those who practice magic arts, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idolaters, and everyone who loves and practices falsehood.”

We all will die. We all will stand before Jesus. The apostle John describes the great white throne of judgment, where all the books are opened (Revelation 20:11–15). All will be judged for what they have done. No one will escape accountability. The apostle Peter charges the church, “The end of all things is at hand; therefore be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of your prayers” (1 Peter 4:7).”

The second one is for believers, where faithfulness and assessment of work for reward and next assignment accordingly.

“Picture it like this. God has a file on every person (the books of Revelation 20:12). All you’ve ever done or said (Matthew 12:36) is recorded there with a grade (from “A” to “F”). When you stand before the “judgment seat of Christ” (2 Corinthians 5:1) to be judged “according to what you have done, whether good or bad,” God will open the file and lay out the tests with their grades. He will pull out all the “F’s” and put them in a pile. Then he will take all the “D’s” and “C’s” and pull the good parts of the test out and place them with the “A’s”, then put the bad with the “F’s”. Then he will take all the “B’s” and “A’s” and pull the bad parts out of them and put them in the “F” pile, and put all the good parts in the “A” pile.”

More notes:

the final judgment that will occur at the end when Jesus returns to rescue His people and destroy the devil. John sees a great white throne, with God seated on it (v. 11).The color white frequently represents purity and righteousness in the book of Revelation (7:9–12), so the whiteness of the throne likely signifies the righteousness of the judgment to come. Some commentators think the white throne may also call back to the white clothing and hair of the Ancient of Days in Daniel 7:9. If so, the white throne also points to the wisdom of God’s judgment. Of course, even if the color of the throne does not highlight the Lord’s wisdom, we know that His final judgment will be according to His perfect wisdom (Rom. 16:27).

All people stand before the throne, including those whom the sea, Death, and Hades give up (Rev. 20:11–13). This points to the resurrection even of unbelievers. According to this text, the resurrected are judged according to what they have done and according to the Book of Life (vv. 12, 15). Scripture does teach that there will be a judgment of our works, and that our service to Christ will be rewarded (1 Cor. 3:10–15). But notice that the determining factor regarding one’s presence in heaven or hell is not works but whether one’s name is in the Book of Life (Rev. 20:15). This must be so, for we know that we do not merit, possess, or inherit eternal life by our works but only through faith in Christ alone (Eph. 2:8–10).

Everyone whose name is not found in the Book of Life is cast into the lake of fire, along with Death and Hades, the dragon (Satan), and the beasts from the land and the sea (Rev. 20:10, 14–15). No evil thing will escape eternal punishment. https://www.ligonier. org/learn/devotionals/the-great-white-throne-judgment

“There but for the grace of God, we would suffer the same torment. There but for the grace of God, we would be judged and condemned. There but for the grace of God, we would be damned forever. The only difference between us and those who will be condemned at the great white throne judgment is the unconditional love and unmerited favor of the Lord Jesus Christ. Every one of us who believes in Jesus Christ deserves to be condemned at this great white throne judgment. We likewise should be cast down into the lake of fire, for we have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. Yet, God has taken our many sins and placed them behind His back. Jesus has removed our iniquities from us as far as the east is from the west. Christ has washed away our sins, imputed His perfect righteousness to us, and covered us with His blood, so that our sins will never be brought into account before God.” ligonier
